FROM THE ROSE GARDEN OF OUR LADY
Rev. William Schaeffler. The essence of a Christian life is the imitation of Christ. The follower of Christ must always have the life and virtues of Our Lord Jesus Christ before his eyes in order to pattern his life after Our Lord's life. The chief concern of a Christian soul therefore should be the practice of a life of virtue—a life tending to the perfection of Christ. Our Lord Himself gives us this command: “Be you therefore perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect” (Mt. 5:48). Thus, if a soul wishes to reach this state of perfection, he or she must make Our Lord's life the principal object of his or her study. A merely cursory knowledge of the events of Our Lord's life is is not enough to reach the perfection of Christ. A soul must delve deeper into the mysteries of Our Lord's life if he wishes to allow Our Lord to form him into another Christ. He must be a man of prayer, contemplating the virtues of Our Lord and the truths of His teachings. He must meditate continually on the life of Our Lord in order to effect a transformation in Christ within his very soul. The Rosary is a powerful meditation on the life and virtues of Christ. It is the perfect combination of vocal and mental prayer, focusing our thoughts and aspirations on the chief mysteries of the life, death and glory of Our Lord Jesus Christ. By praying the Rosary,, a Christian soul enters into the mysteries of Our Lord's life and he turns to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the perfect imitator of Christ, for guidance in his imitation of Christ. Thus, a true imitator of Christ must develop a true devotion to Our Lady and a love for the Rosary. Each mystery has a beautiful illustration, several paragraphs from the Gospels (or a Father of the Church), ten mini-meditations—one for each Hail Mary. 15 mysteries. Booklet - 89 pages.

ROSARY: (Lat. rosarium,, a rose-garden, whence, a wreath or garland.) A string of beads consisting of five sets (decades) each of ten small and one larger bead (a crucifix with two large and three small beads is ordinarily added); the prayers said on these beads. Each decade is associated with a mystery of the faith and these mysteries number fifteen... The method of saying the rosary, in public or in private, is to recite an Our Father (large bead), ten Hail Marys (small beads), and Glory be to the Father (large bead) while meditating on the proper mystery; the essence of the devotion consists in a loving and intelligent meditation and not a mechanical repetition of the prayers. — A Catholic Dictionary, Donald Attwater, Macmillan Company, New York: 1954.
